A Puerto Rican nongovernmental organization has asked the territory’s full Supreme Court to reverse a ruling deny8ing it access to a report on tax expenditures and tax abatement agreements granted by the island’s government.
Espacios Abiertos (Open Spaces), a NGO that advocates for greater transparency in public expenditures and accountability in public affairs, sued the Puerto Rican government in November 2018 for a copy of the report, which the government had submitted to a federal fiscal oversight board. A month later, the San Juan Superior Court ruled that the government failed to adequatelhy describe the documents at issue to justify its claim that they were confidential, and ordered that they be turned over to Espacios Abiertos.
